A. Installing Darwine

  1. Download the Darwine program from http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/ and install both Darwine and TRiX into the Applications folder. Put the Trees installer file you have downloaded from the web into the Darwine folder.
  2. Double-click on the installer file. This should bring up the installer. Ask it to unzip the file into the C:\Program Files location and close the installer after it has done so. The program is now located in the ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/ folder. You can move it into the Darwine folder itself, if you like, with the unix/linux 'mv' command.
  3. Run the TRiX program that comes with Darwine and scroll down the page to the "MS common controls 5.80" entry. Click on the check box and then click "Install."
  4. Run the winecfg program by double-clicking on the icon and wait for the control panel to come up. Then select the "graphics" tab and activate the "Emulate a virtual desktop" checkbox. The recommended desktop size is 1152 X 870 but it can be larger if your monitor is large enough. Click the Apply button and then the OK button at the bottom of the control panel.

B. Running Trees under Darwine

  1. Trees is started within Darwine by double-clicking on the Trees program icon inside the Trees3 folder. This will bring up the Mac's X11 program and Winehelper. After a short while the Trees program will come up inside a large blue window, which acts as a desktop substitute within Wine.
  2. In the Mac X11 preferences, the "Emulate 3-button mouse" preference must be unchecked to allow the ALT key(=Apple command key) to work.
  3. Grammar tools and files of saved trees are best kept in the Trees3 folder. To choose a grammar or open a tree file, select the relevant menu item in Trees and then in the resultant dialog window, click repeatedly on the "up folder" icon next to the open folder box at the top until that folder is "Darwine." Next double-click on the Trees3 folder. You will then see the relevant files of grammar tools and the tree files from which you can select the one you want.
  4. The size of the desktop within which the Trees program runs is set at 1152 x 870. This size can be changed by running winecfg.exe, clicking on the "Graphics" tab in the window that comes up, and changing the two numbers in the relevant box under "Desktop size."
  5. The screen resolution is set at 96 dpi. You might want to increase it to as much as 150 dpi to produce better looking output for word processing documents.
  6. To transfer a tree from Trees to a word processing document, you must take a screenshot and drag the resulting image file into the document. The easiest way to do this is to type Command-Shift-4 and move the mouse to just outside the upper left corner of the tree. Then hold down the (left) mouse button, drag the mouse across the tree downward and to the right, and release the mouse button. A file with the name "Picture 1" will be created on the Desktop. This file is a png image file, which can be used in most word processing programs just by dragging it into an open document. You can open the file in the Mac's Preview program and save it in another image format.
